018 - Red deer antler and Karanda thumbstick head on a long twisty hazel shank. This one looks absolutely stunning. I've never been entirely happy with antler thumbsticks because the V-shape never seems to fit the thumb just right and usually looks rather lopsided. So...I took two complementary antler tines and spliced them together to make a "V" that does fit the thumb and is reasonably symmetrical. I mounted it on a piece of dark red-brown Karanda wood and smoothed the shape from the antler through the Karanda to the shank. I then inlaid the joints with copper-filled epoxy resin and did the same for the surface texture of the antler and the capping on the tines. The shank has a deep twisted channel running down it and I emphasised this by partially stripping the bark. Not only does the thumbstick head fit the hand nicely (and it's silky-smooth to the touch), but if you tire of the high "thumbstick hold" on a long walk (as I often do with a thumbstick), there's another grip provided by the natural twist in the shank at just the right height. You won't find a better thumbstick, though I say it myself. SOLD |
