048 - A rams horn thistle-nosed market stick with a twisty hazel shank. |

I made this one to the client's requirements, incorporating his regimental insignia. We agreed to use a fairly modest horn, restricting the material available to carve the thistle, which is therefore set snug against the nose, almost in bas-relief. |

It all worked out rather nicely. The horn is quite transparent in parts and displays a mixture of white, red, grey, green and blue tints. The thistle looked so attractive in its natural state we decided not to embellish it with any added colour or texture. |

See how the colour of the horn changes according to the lighting conditions and the colour of the surroundings. |

The client's insignia were embedded in clear resin against appropriately-coloured background. The spacer is of banded brass and copper-filled resin. |

The lower half of the shank is a nice twisty with plenty of character. I smoothed down the sharp edges of the twist, cutting through the bark to emphasise the twisty shapes. |

This makes a nicely proportioned and well-balanced stick, which I know will be greatly appreciated by its owner.
