I made this one for a friend who needed a sturdy stick for support. The handle was shaped from a piece of yew with a little of the lighter-coloured sapwood adding a bit of visual interest. |

The ash shank was sanded down, exposing patches of bare wood and the various layers of under-bark in a random pattern. I then applied a chemical stain. This reacts differently with each layer, some turning almost black, some a rich brown, and others retaining their original lighter colours. |

I then applied many sparing coats of thinned yacht varnish to consolidate the surface and provide a smooth finish. The spacer is black buffalo horn between two layers of reclaimed white plastic. |
