089 - An antler and hazel thumbstick

The head is made from a piece of red deer antler, mounted on a medium-weight golden hazel shank via a cherry wood spacer.

The surface texture of the antler was filled with a brass-powder & epoxy resin mix, then smoothed down and highly polished.

The tips of the antler are capped with black buffalo horn.

The antler has an interestingly curved shape, which fits the right hand perfectly - though it's usable in the left as well.

I made the cherry wood spacer to form a rounded flange between head and shank. As well as the visual effect, this helps to support the hand and provides an alternative grip on the shank below (useful for those uphill stretches). The joints are filled with the brass/epoxy resin mix to enhance the overall appearance.

The shank is a rich golden colour.

Maximum length to thumb notch approx. 58 inches / 148 cm.
