097 - A hazel crook with a yew handle. The nose is in the shape of a snake's head.

Maximum overall length 55" / 1.4m

Medium thickness and light/medium weight.

This is a full length crook and I would suggest it is not suitable for cutting down for use as a market stick. Fine for use as a walking staff, but the handle is unsuitable for bearing the user's weight (or for catching errant sheep, by the way!).

The handle is made from a nicely-figured piece of well-seasoned yew. The light-coloured band over the crown is the pale sap-wood, contrasting with the darker heart-wood.

The nose lent itself to this simple carving of a snake's head. Obviously this isn't meant to be an anatomically correct image of any particular kind of snake, it's just a general impression of "snakeness"! To complete the impression I added a flexible forked tongue in black plastic. Yet another use for the ubiquitous cable-tie (also highly recommended as a pipe-cleaner!).

Here you can see the transition between sap-wood and heart-wood.

The joint is made with a narrow spacer of white buffalo bone. There are some attractive patterns where the grain curls around the neck.

The golden-brown hazel shank is good and straight without excessive taper.

And finally, a quick tour round this lovely piece of yew.

A fine stick for the collector or for "Sunday best" use by anyone who takes a gentle stroll in the country.
