118 - A slim but strong knobstick with a decorated cow horn knob and a holly shank

This was made for a customer, using a knobbly holly shank whose main feature was a massive old scar which revealed the dark water-stained heartwood.

The knob was fashioned from a nicely-marked black & white cow horn tip. This was one of a pair found in a charity shop; they had been bolted together to form a crude hanging wall ornament. The horn was filled with polyester resin and topped with a slice of laburnum wood.

I inserted a disk of matching synthetic "horn" as a background for the bearded collie enamelled badge set in clear casting resin...

...and dealt with the original small bolt-hole by inlaying an oval of mother-of-pearl.

The horn knob is mounted on a spacer made from two pieces of black buffalo horn sandwiched together with a thin layer of brass-filled epoxy resin.

Above you can see the full character of the gnarly old holly shank.
