![]() | 126 - A smart walking stick made from an old brass fitting mounted on an ebonised hardwood shank. Maximum length approx. 36"/ 910mm overall. Medium to heavy weight, strong. |

| The brass handle was, I think, one of my better junk-stall finds. I reckon it
was originally a mounting for the end of a hand-rail, possibly on a boat or in
a hotel. Or maybe the foot-rail of a bar. Whatever, it might as well have been
custom made to fit on top of a stick shank. It fits the hand perfectly too,
providing a very comfortable grip. What's more, I found that a sharp tap on the bell-shaped end produces a very clear, sustained, bell-like note. (According to my electronic tuner, at 890Hz - just a tad sharp of the octave above concert A. Good enough for jazz, as they say). The shank was made from ramin (a very stable, light-coloured hardwood), then stained and ebonised with black lacquer before finishing with Tru-Oil for protection. It's a good sturdy and comfortable stick, offering plenty of support if needed. And you can always gain the barman's attention by tapping the end of the handle with a coin!
