| C013 - Collector's item: an antique cane walking stick with ivory knob. Length 33.5 inches (85 cm) Thickness of shank tapers from 0.75 inches (19 mm) down to 0.65 inches (15 mm). |

| The lightweight but very strong cane is topped with a small and simple turned
ivory knob and the shank is dead straight. Well it is now anyway, but I
attended to that after I took the pictures!! I would guess it dates from the late 19th to early 20th century. |

| The shank is, I believe, of Malacca cane. (I wrote "rattan" originally, but this was just a slip of the mind!) This is more often seen with the shell or husk removed, to reveal the smoother, rather darker-coloured cane underneath. But in this case the husk has been left in place, with its distinctive light buff colour, striated surface, and "stepped" appearance. The original ferrule was missing, so I have fitted a new steeel-tipped brass one. As usual, I have secured this with hot-melt glue so that it can be replaced when the need arises without damaging the end of the shank. | ![]() | |
| The knob carries these "age" cracks, which are quite a common feature of old
ivory. They shouldn't affect the strength - and I have made quite sure of this
by filling the inside of the knob with epoxy resin! Otherwise, the whole cane is in excellent condition and is very usable,
providing plenty of support if needed.   SOLD   |
