| C017 - Collector's item: a lady's ebony and silver fashion cane. Length 35 inches (89 cm) Thickness of shank 0.35 inch (9 mm) tapering down to 0.25 inch (6 mm). |

| This is very definitely a collector's item. It is intended purely as a lady's
fashion accessory and really serves no practical purpose at all! The shank is an extremely slim rod of very-straight-grained ebony. The handle is not hallmarked, but I had it tested at a local jeweller's and they report it checked out as 925 silver. However, in the absence of any marking I can only say it's "probably" silver. You can see there is a small cluster of minor dents on the handle, but otherwise it's all in excellent condition. |

| On the left, this little indentation appears to be where the handle is pinned
to the shank. the attachment is in fact very solid so I expect there's more
holding it together than just this pin! On the right, you can see the dainty little ferrule in plated brass. This is tipped with iron or steel. | ![]() | |
| ...And here we come to the crunch! It's difficult to appreciate the scale of
this little cane until you see it in relation to the human hand. A collector friend reports having seen an almost identical cane described as "early 20th century". I can't pin it down any more than that; I think it would have been quite at home with any haute couture outfit from the 1920s to at least the 1950s. I will have to use the word "elegant" rather more discriminatingly after this! |
