C017 - Collector's item: a lady's ebony and silver fashion cane.

Length 35 inches (89 cm)

Thickness of shank 0.35 inch (9 mm) tapering down to 0.25 inch (6 mm).

This is very definitely a collector's item. It is intended purely as a lady's fashion accessory and really serves no practical purpose at all!

The shank is an extremely slim rod of very-straight-grained ebony. The handle is not hallmarked, but I had it tested at a local jeweller's and they report it checked out as 925 silver. However, in the absence of any marking I can only say it's "probably" silver.

You can see there is a small cluster of minor dents on the handle, but otherwise it's all in excellent condition.

On the left, this little indentation appears to be where the handle is pinned to the shank. the attachment is in fact very solid so I expect there's more holding it together than just this pin!

On the right, you can see the dainty little ferrule in plated brass. This is tipped with iron or steel.

...And here we come to the crunch! It's difficult to appreciate the scale of this little cane until you see it in relation to the human hand.

A collector friend reports having seen an almost identical cane described as "early 20th century". I can't pin it down any more than that; I think it would have been quite at home with any haute couture outfit from the 1920s to at least the 1950s.

I will have to use the word "elegant" rather more discriminatingly after this!
