C024 - Collector's item: a t-handle walking stick by Brigg of London. The handle is horn and the shank is turned from rosewood. The silver collar is hallmarked for London 1927.

Approx. dimensions:

Overall length 34.5" / 87.5cm.

Diameter of shank 0.75" / 19mm tapering to 0.5" / 13mm

This smart little stick has a simple handle made from black horn (probably buffalo). The shank is turned from a fairly slim piece of straight-grained rosewood, and the joint is enhanced with a plain silver collar.

The silver carries a London hallmark for 1927 and the name of the makers, "BRIGG, LONDON", along with their ship trademark and the letters "G.C." (or maybe GG?).

Brigg walking sticks are held in high regard by collectors. Thomas Brigg established the Brigg Umbrella Co in London in 1836. In 1943 they joined forces with Swaine & Adeney, makers of luggage and leather goods, to form Swaine Adeney Brigg.

This stick was in need of some TLC when I came across it. The horn handle had been neglected and needed re-polishing, while the length of black-painted metal tube covering part of the shank looked ominous. Sure enough, on removing it I found the shank was broken and had been rather crudely repaired. I re-made the repair, inserting a length of stainless steel studding through the joint. I then used a small piece of the metal tube (which turned out to be brass) to cover the repair.

Despite my efforts, this stick should not be relied upon for support and needs to be used with due respect.

I retained the original ferrule as this is steel-tipped and still has plenty of mileage left in it.
