| C026 - Collector's item: a carved bamboo rootknob cane in the Japanese styleApprox. dimensions: Overall length 35" / 89cm. Diameter of shank 0.75" / 19mm tapering to 0.65" / 16mm | | |
| This is a fairly slim but very strong walking cane made from a bamboo stem with
its root-knob attached. It fits the hand well and provides plenty of support. As is usually the case with bambo there are some minor splits here and there, but they do not significantly affect the appearance or strength of the cane. |

| The shank is carved with depictions of two butterflies (or similar) caught
between a hungry-looking bird above and an equally hungry-looking snake below. [Added 09/03/2005] - I have since learnt that the "butterflies" are probably bees, which frequently figure in Japanes art, symbolising sweetness/happiness/something like that. The carving is not in the same sort of class as that on no. C020, and this is reflected in the price. |

| The ferrule was missing, so I fitted a new steel-tipped brass one. As usual this is fixed with hot-melt glue, so can easily be replaced in future without damaging the cane. |
