| C028 - Collector's item: a slim one-piece walking stick/cane in what I think is
Macassar ebony.Approx. dimensions: Overall length 33" / 84cm. Diameter of shank 0.7" / 17mm tapering to 0.5" / 12mm
| This neat, simple little stick is made from a single very attractively-figured piece of a dark wood. It was described to me as "Brazilian ebony", but I can't say I've heard of this. Although the colouring is reminiscent of some darker types of rosewood, I don't think the grain is regular enough nor as sharply defined as the rosewoods I have seen. It does, however, seem to me to be a good match with pictures I have seen of Macassar ebony. This appears to have the right combination of very dark, almost black, irregular grain alternating with a lighter coffee colour. It's certainly not African ebony, which is a deep black/purple with occasional slightly lighter tints. | |||
| The classic tau/Fritz/t- handle fits a small to medium hand very comfortably and places the user's weight nicely over the slim shank. There is a small chip off the edge of the handle as you can see in the pictures. However, this has become polished with use and is now an integral part of the stick's appearance. (It also fits the thumb nicely if used in the right hand). |

The age is rather indeterminate, but I would guess it belongs to the early part of the 20th century.
| There is an occasional little ding here and there, but nothing serious. You can
see the worst of these here.
The shank has only the slightest hint of curvature and the stick is certainly
in good usable condition. The original ferrule was missing and I have replaced it with a good-quality steel-tipped brass one. As always, this is retained with hot-melt glue, so it can be changed in future without risking any damage to the shank. |
