C045 - Collector's item: A simple little knobstick. Malacca cane shaft topped with a carved ebony knob in the form of a Turk's head knot.

Approx. dimensions:

Overall length 33.75" /850mm

Diameter of shaft just under 3/4" / 18mm

Light weight, medium strength.

There's nothing too fancy about this - it's just a simple unpretentious knobstick, competently made from good-quality materials.

The shaft is malacca cane, as evidenced by the prominent ridge running the length of each segment. Thicker malacca canes will consist of just a single mature segment from the base of a stem, while slim ones like this will be cut from further up the stem where the plant is busy creating new growth.

The knob is carved from a piece of ebony and consists of a Turk's head knot on an octagonal base.

The stick has a nice rich patina and colouration, along with a fine collection of old "battle scars", suggesting it has quite some age. It's difficult to say just how old it would be, but I would guess possibly late 19th century.

Despite these signs of age, the stick is in good condition. The shaft is near-enough straight and quite strong for its size.

The original ferrule was missing when I purchased the stick, so I have fitted a new steel-tipped brass one. As always, I secured this with hot-melt glue - so it can be replaced in future without doing any damage to the shaft.

A nice little old knobstick with plenty of character, and still perfectly usable.
