C046 - Collector's item: a partridge cane and silver walking stick/cane in art deco style by Brigg of London.

Approx. dimensions:
Overall length 32.5" /825mm
Diameter of shaft 5/8" / 18mm
Medium weight, strong.

This is a remarkably sturdy little stick in early art deco style. I believe the shank and handle are made of partridge cane, though I find it difficult to positively identify the many similar types of cane. The 90° joint and capping of the handle are sterling silver, hallmarked for London 1901. The maker's mark "BRIGG" appears on the joint and what appears to be the Brigg logo is stamped on both silver pieces, though the markings are somewhat rubbed and it is difficult to make this out. The markings show traces of gold plating, which has presumably been rubbed off the rest of the silver.

Brigg is the best known of all British stickmakers of the period, and the firm continues today as Swaine Adeney Brigg, after a merger with Swaine Adeney, mainly umbrella and leather travel goods makers, following the bombing of Brigg's premises during the London Blitz in 1943.

The (presumably) original owner's name and address are marked on the silver joint: "W. TYRRELL, 12 HANS ROAD, SW." I have now found Hans Road in my London street atlas - it's in Knightsbridge, right next to Harrod's, off Brompton Road. Dead posh, that is!

There are a few little "dings" in the silver, but apart from this the stick is in excellent condition. The original ferrule was missing and I have replaced this with a new steel-tipped brass one. As always, I secured this with hot-melt glue so that it can be replaced in future without doing any damage to the shaft. The shank is nice and straight, offering plenty of support if needed.

A very nice little stick of real quality and in very usable condition.
