C047 - Collector's item: a drover's cane. This is made from rattan cane root-knob stock. The knob is encased in leather.

Approx. dimensions:
Overall length 36" / 920mm
Diameter of shaft 5/8" / 16mm, tapering down to 3/8" / 10mm
Lightweight, flexible - not suitable for use as a walking stick.

This slim, flexible cane is said to be a "drover's cane", used by a drover or herdsman for driving cattle.

The tightly-stitched 7"-long leather covering extends well below the knob, providing a very comfortable grip when the cane is held horizontally or with the tip raised in the "I'm in charge here" position. (You've got to show those cattle who's boss!)

This item obviously has some considerable age, having a rich patina, rubbed smooth with constant handling. The leather, possibly pigskin, is darkened with age but is in remarkably good condition - including the long stitched seam. The bottom of the leatherwork is finished off nicely with a braided band.

The cane is tipped with a slim brass ferrule. This is well-battered as one would expect on a cane used for waving around and whacking things with. There is no base to the ferrule - either it has been worn away, or it was always open at the end. There is a nail or short piece of steel rod in the tip of the cane to protect it from wear. All I've done is to run a little glue inside the ferrule to stop it rattling (or falling off).

The shaft is slim and flexible and has a slight bow to it, so it is quite unsuitable for use as a walking aid. (Incidentally, my dear Watson, I perceive the original owner was right-handed.)

An excellent example of an old rural artefact. And still good for whacking things with.
