C056 - Collector's item: a bentwood crook-handled walking stick in hickory with an engraved white metal collar dated 1925.

Approx. dimensions:
Overall length 35.5" / 900mm
Diameter of shaft 13/16" / 21mm,
tapering down to 5/8" / 16mm
Light to medium weight, good strength.

A simple but attractive cane/walking stick, bent from a single piece of turned hickory (I think). The light colour of the wood displays attractive patterns in the grain and the smooth finish makes it very comfortable to hold. There are a few minor dints in the wood, but the overall condition is excellent for its age.

The white metal collar does not appear to be plated, the deep engraving showing no obvious signs of breakthrough. However, it's not hallmarked so I can't be sure whether it's silver or maybe some sort of pewter or other alloy. Whatever it is, it polishes up beautifully.

The bold inscription reads: "To J.H. Hussey on his 90th birthday from a few friends I.C.C.C. 1925".

The original ferrule was missing, and I have replaced it with a steel-tipped brass one, secured with hot-melt glue for the ease of future replacements.

A very nice stick for everyday use, but with a touch of class.

(If you're wondering why the wood appears darker in the pictures immediately above, that's because the exposure was adjusted to show the detail of the engraving.)
